Birds of Goose Island

by

Jan. 4, 2023: Goose Island State Park, Texas. I went bird watching this morning with the birding hosts who run a tram program a couple of days each week. We saw about 40 different species during 2+ hours of looking. The kingfisher and the roseate spoonbill were my favorites for their beauty and the great egret was fun to observe trying to intimidate all the others in the pond.

We had a park ranger stop by the tram to ask if our host had trained his scope out on the fires in the bay. He shrugged, and said no. The ranger grinned and said “If it don’t fly, you don’t look!” They guessed that it was the small islands that were set on fire with a controlled burn to keep out the wild pigs.
