Today was cleaning and moving day. Before leaving the west side of Mt. Desert Island, we did one last hike just up the road between Seawall and Bass Harbor at Ship Harbor. This is a short hike, a little over a mile, but it gives access to tide pools and is a walk in the forest and along the beach.
The squirrels in Maine are small, just a bit bigger than a chipmunk, and they have creamy undersides. They will stand on their hind legs and chirp with a bird sound to defend food/territory. I witnessed this behavior in one that then ran away with a pine cone. Tony said, “Look, a unicorn!” Cute little buggers.

We left the “quiet side” of Mt. Desert Island, and moved to a new campground on the east side. We found out just how bad the traffic can be over here when we stopped at a grocery store in Bar Harbor. The timing was just right for us to get a spot in the parking lot that would accommodate Usain. It took us a good minute or two just to move past the front door with everyone coming and going, and I could see the spot opening up. Crazy busy! Guess we’ll rely on the bus on this side.
Tony wanted to take a stroll shortly after we arrived in Hadley’s Point Campground, and made a beeline to the main road. Earlier we saw the sign for homemade pies across the road, and I knew that’s where we were headed. Turns out they serve lobster, so Tony enjoyed another lobster roll while I snarfed his chips. Then we got blueberry pie and a whoopie pie to go. We checked out Hadley Point Beach, a perfect place for water tromping, before heading back to the van.
Lobster traps are used in all kinds of decor around here. Push what you have a lot of!
And speaking of cute buggers – Catnip continues to “ask” to go outside and she is getting a bit braver around other people. They can look at her now, and maybe exchange a few words with me without her slinking back to the van right away.
