Chisos Basin, Big Bend National Park

by

The Hot Springs was a nice hike, but we decided to fill our afternoon with another hike and we needed to charge the van batteries with a drive. Chisos Basin is in the middle of the park and at 5400 feet elevation. Vehicles longer than 24 feet are not recommended as there are some sharp turns in the road. Usain did just fine, and the air is cooler up here. I had to change out of my wet shirt. We ate lunch at the restaurant which started with parmesan truffle onion rings with aioli sauce, a delightful treat, followed by a salad for me and a wrap for Tony. With our tummies full of good food, we set off on the Windows Trail. Good thing it was all downhill at the start. What goes down must come back up, but with hiking after lunch it was nice to do the easy part first. The pour-off rock at the end is really slick and smooth from millions of years of water pouring through this opening. The 900 foot climb back was challenging, though Tony did run the last of it to go check on the cats as the sun had come out during our hike. He said he still had something left in the tank; I did not. The van was still cool with the mountain air, and we earned a hot shower and a good night’s sleep back at Rio Grande Village.
