For an afternoon hike, we followed the Indian Wells trail behind the science history museum. A trailhead sign said it climbs up to an overlook spot above the museum. This overlook is almost a mile in distance, not the half-mile advertised. From there, the hike really meanders across many dry and some deep washes and hikers have to pay attention to rock cairns and rocks lining the path to find the way. There are many wiggle-waggles and we both wanted our walking sticks for this part, but had left them behind for the “easy” path up to the overlook. Clouds were clearly dropping rain over the valley below, and we wisely turned back before coming across the actual Indian wells, which are bedrock mortar holes that were used to grind grains. Temperatures dropped and more than rain fell. We had some large clumps of snow followed by small hail that covered the ground for a bit. Crazy weather! We were grateful to be back at camp and not out on the trail.
