Thursday night we walked a four-mile round trip to the visitors center in Giant City State Park. We didn’t have cell service and there was no scale on the paper map of the park. It is very spread out, and partially includes a county road with higher speeds than is truly safe to walk along. We left the hikes to Friday morning when we could drive the van down to a picnic area several miles from the campground to catch trail heads.
We were able to do the Giant City Nature Trail to see large boulders around the eroded paths (giants on the city streets), the Devil’s Standtable Nature Trail with top-heavy, mushroom-shaped bluffs caused by the lower rock eroding faster , and the Stonefort Nature Trail with a Native American rock wall that has confused the historians as to the reason behind it. Some of the hiking was done in the rain as we didn’t have an extra day here due to the campground filling up for the holiday weekend.
I was excited to find a Luna moth, and found out that the adults have such reduced mouth parts that they do not eat and only live for one week at the most. This one had been hit by a car. Hopefully it mated before its demise.
