The Historic Tour of Mammoth Cave

by

The Historic Tour is the most popular tour in the park. It is listed as moderate rather than easy because of the length at almost two miles, and the 500+ stairs (spread out, not all at once), and the narrow passages where you walk bent over. It was fun to do the narrow passages while feeling perfectly safe, and the stairs aren’t a problem with 120 people on the sold-out tour because you are just waiting, then moving a few steps, then waiting. Can’t get out of breath with that many tour friends, and it pays to be short on this tour. I did not have to bend over as much as others around me did. There were stairs in this section, too, which required some balance to go down while bent over.

Like yesterday, we ate lunch after the tour then Tony had work time. This afternoon we continued hiking down the Sinkhole trail that we did part of yesterday, past Whites Cave, to the Echo River Springs and Green River Ferry. With the rain, the water was higher than normal and very green/brown in color. We could clearly see the spring welling up in the river, though.
