Ft. Boonsborough is near Lexington, so we are back near that city and will see the horse park that was closed earlier in the week. The current fort was built in 1974 to represent a typical fort, and has people in costume showing what frontier life would be like . We saw a blacksmith, weaver, tavern keeper, candle maker, leather crafter/bladesmith, and a soldier. It is about twice the size of the original 1775 fort built by Daniel Boone and company. The new one is built up on a hill while the original sits close to the Kentucky River.

The state park has a large campground that is close to the forts and the river museum we will see tomorrow. We can walk everywhere and leave Usain parked. The Pioneer Forage Trail is overgrown and has poison ivy in places where it is hard to avoid it. The trail follows a rocky-bottomed creek and is very shady. Unfortunately the invasive Fortune’s Spindle is everywhere and will choke this forest in the future. It will out-compete the trees and kill them. The pool is closed indefinitely, but kids are enjoying the miniature golf course, playgrounds and riding their bikes and scooters.
