Bemidji State Park

by

This was a travel day and laundry day. We did take a hike after arriving to Bemidji State Park, and I found a very scaly mushroom. We also saw a “blonde” cottontail that Lauren correctly diagnosed as being leucistic. Its eyes were dark, so it is not an albino, but the fur color was very light. Leucism is an inherited, rare condition and results in partial loss of pigmentation that leaves the animal more vulnerable to predation; it is just a bit more common than albinism and doesn’t affect the eyes.

Catnip enjoyed exploring our campsite. She even watched two dogs walk by and didn’t run back to the van! One of the dogs was whining and really wanted to “meet” her.
