5th Port: Puntarenas, Costa Rica

by

The weather forecast for thunderstorms caused our “aerial tram and river cruise” excursion to be canceled. We were most disappointed, but know the tourism company was protecting us and lost out on today’s fees in the process. Instead we had a nice walk through Puntarenas, which sits out on a barrier island off the coast of Costa Rica. There was an open air market to walk through, and a Paseo de Los Turistas promenade with parks and benches and statues along the beach down to a lighthouse on the island tip.

The walk to the lighthouse was over 1.5 miles, so we took some rests along the way and back. Tony and I continued into the town for a bit until we were tired and joined the others back onboard. We had a fancy dinner tonight at the French restaurant, Le Bistro.

As the Jewel was disembarking, Dad and I watched the readiness process for a bit from the balcony while we played some cribbage. We watched a crew member walk out and grab a pole to drag along the metal walkway at the end of the dock to scare away the pelicans that were camped out everywhere. He then removed the flat metal discs that were on the ship’s mooring cables to bring back onboard. These discs are rat guards to prevent rodents from coming on board (or leaving the ship). This was the only time I saw these down low on the cables where the worker could reach them from the dock rather than up high next to the ship. Hopefully, the rodent population stayed put!
