Lisa and I have made several day-trips to the “end of the road” during our past stays on South Padre Island, but this year we decided to do something different and spend the night there. We had heard once that it was a great place to get away from city lights to do a little stargazing. With both the moon and the clouds looking like they would cooperate on Sunday night, we decided to give it a try.
After driving north as far as we could go on State Park Road 100, we took a long evening walk along the beach and climbed the dunes overlooking Laguna Madre. After sunset we heading into the van for supper. Once it was dark and the moon was nearly set we headed out again to view the magnificent night sky. We laid out on the sand on a blanket with binoculars taking it all in for a while and then headed back into Usain for the night.
In the morning, we took another beach walk and collected sea shells along Sea Shell Beach. A couple a really pretty ones that Lisa found were occupied by hermit crabs so we had to leave them behind. Overall, the end of the road was a great experience!

A walk on the aptly named Sea Shell Beach…
