Because we were traveling in early July when the sun never fully sets in Iceland, we found that we could easily do evening activities and go to bed late. Our first crater hike at Kerid Crater, a 6000 year old crater in the Western Volcanic Zone, was on our list for July 3rd, but we drove to it after supper on July 1st as it was relatively close to the hotel. Martie and I hiked the rim, then I walked down to the lake edge of this 55m deep crater.

Grabrok crater is about half the age of Kerid, and it was windy and rainy when we visited it on July 8th. I climbed 750+ stairs to the crater inside a larger cone, and walked around the rim. This was when it was nice to have two portable WiFi units as I took one so I was connected while hiking alone, and Martie caught up on email with the other one while she waited for me. It was super windy at the top edge, and the view was amazing!

Saxholl Crater was on our list for July 9th, but we drove past it looking for a restroom, and didn’t make it back to see that one. Next time!
