On July 3rd, Solheimojokull was our first visit to a glacier with pieces of it floating in the water and heading out to sea. It was raining pretty good when we arrived, so we walked the path up to observe the glacier and took some pictures. There were kayakers in the water with the small icebergs and a tour group heading out to hike on the glacier with harnesses, crampons and ice axes. This is definitely something I would like to do if I ever get back.

On July 4, we had a beautiful, sunny day to visit the next glacier, Breidamerkurjokull, in Vatnajokull National Park. This one has a large lagoon, Jokulsarlon, full of icebergs making a very short trip out to sea. Blue ice is the newest to calve off the glacier. White shows interaction with the air and black is from volcanic ash. The glacier is about 10km away, and this is very salty water. The lagoon is beautiful, and we decided to get a duck boat ride out amongst the icebergs.

After the icebergs travel under the bridge and hit the ocean, they get pummeled and wash back up on Diamond Beach as clear ice pieces.
