After a morning at the Glaumbaer turf farm and the Kolugjufur Canyon and waterfalls, we had to make a decision about what to do next as we had too many things on our list. We chose to do this peninsula to see the sea stacks and seals rather than the Byggdasafn Hunvetninga and Strandamanna Museum (history of the area and shark fishing) and the Ullarselid Wool Center. The road around the peninsula was mostly gravel, but in good condition..

Hvitserkur sea stack is the most photographed sea stack on the north side of Iceland. It is said to look like a dragon getting a drink. It is full of sea bird nests.

Illugastadir seal and bird watching spot is a developed place on private property. There are picnic tables, hiking trails, a bathroom, and cute seals on their signs. This protected coastline attracts sea ducks and seals. We saw many families of Eider ducks teaching the young ones to dive and harbor seals lazing out on rocks. They were at a distance, so binoculars are necessary. There is also a viewing building to get out of bad weather to watch the seals.

We only saw two cars with foreign license plates during our trip; this one was from the Netherlands, the other one was from Denmark. I suppose if you are living here temporarily but for a duration, shipping your car over would be worth it.

Definitely could have used another day in the Akureri area or an overnight stay between Akureri and Borgarnes
