As we approached the gate of the Valley of Fire State Park, it was clear that this is a popular spot. We joined a line of about 20 cars at the west entrance, and the line stayed about that long as people were issued their passes. The scenery is amazing, beautiful, gorgeous, sublime, etc. Words and our pictures will not do it justice, so trust me, if you are ever in the Vegas area, this park is worth the hour or so drive out from the city. It has wow factor to the nth degree!

The Pinnacles Hike

We checked out our campsite, then headed to a trailhead nearby for our first hike. The Pinnacles is a five-mile hike that starts out in a wash with no red rocks in sight for over two miles. The Pinnacles are hiding behind the hills in front of you, but the hard work to get out there in the loose sand and rock will be worth it. We were the only hikers on the trail. A couple just stepping off at the trail head gave us some hints as to what to expect.

Arch Rock Campground

There are two campgrounds in the park, and they are close together. Arch Rock has no hookups, only vault toilets, and the sites are shorter which is tailor made for vans, of which we see a lot here. The campsites are spaced out and everyone has an incredible view of the red sandstone. When I made the reservation, this was the last site available in either campground for this day. Got lucky!

Plant life

The Pinnacles trail had lots of beaver tail prickly pear that are showing signs of blooming soon. Unfortunately, we will miss seeing these. Birdcage Evening Primrose is blooming all over the park with big, showy white flowers.

We can’t wait to see what our second day here has to offer.
