2026 Oregon Trip Recap

Our 7-week adventure to northern California and the state of Oregon was amazing. We left home a few days later than planned, but with some longer travel days we were able to make it to our first pre-scheduled reservation in California with a day to spare.

We traveled in 10 different states, and spent at least one night in 8 of them. We also visited 3 new-to-us national parks — Lassen Volcanic, Redwoods, and Crater Lake. Traveling up “The” 101 along the west coast lived up to its reputation. Oregon has some of the best roads throughout of all the states that we’ve traveled thus far in Usain. Plus, every road we took was scenic, including the interstate (I-84) through the Columbia River gorge.

The weather was great throughout the Pacific Northwest with expected cool and foggy days along the coast. Traveling back through Idaho and on east was very hot (also expected), but no major wind or storms to drive through, which was unexpected. The nighttime temperatures were low enough to forgo the noisy A/C.

Our total route shown below was 4,223 miles, but with all our excursions and day trips, we put a total of 5,645 miles on Usain. The super singles (van wheels) that we had put on while in Fort Collins to replace the duallies turned out as good as I had hoped. They look and handle fantastic!

    I am always curious on a trip like this…. how many overnights did you pre-book? and how far in advance?

      Hi, Steven – it is a trick to get to see what you want and yet have the freedom to stop when you see something unexpected. This trip was completely planned because OR state parks and National Parks are very popular in the summer when families take vacations. I did this trip in early April and only left open the coming and going from Iowa and a short time between Lassen and Redwood. There were lots of choices for that stop, and I waited to see how hot it might be. We ended up with electrical hookups in a RV park when the temps were in the 90s rather than do a cheaper national forest stop I had contemplated. For our previous winter trip, I only scheduled 6 of the 14 weeks we had planned to be gone. We chased nice weather and had no problems finding places with very little advanced notice. You have to do your research and know what is popular. We missed staying in Silver Falls State Park (OR) because I couldn’t find open sites in April for July. Harvest Host is a great last-minute filler for us. And so fun, too. I highly recommend that membership. Hope this is helpful!
