Bear Lake State Park, Utah

by

We arrived in Bear Lake after a beautifully scenic drive through Logan Canyon along the Logan River. Bear Lake straddles the Utah/Idaho border and sits at almost 6,000 feet elevation with a depth of about 200 feet. As I explored the southern lakeshore, the water was pretty clear and I tromped for over half a mile just walking in very shallow water. From some of the lakeside homes with docks, I would guess that the lake is much lower than in the past. The catfish jump out of the water, sometimes clearing it completely. The Western Grebes are excellent divers and fun to watch . A pair of Killdeer were nervously chirping at me as I walked by what must have been their nest.
