We moved to the Blue Bell Campground today. I wanted to try an official hike, so we were looking for a place on the Wildlife Loop Road and thought the Prairie Trail sounded easy. It was shorter than the advertised three miles by almost a third, which was fine given my labored breathing on the hills (still recovering from a nasty virus). It was more than a prairie trail—we crossed the creek several times, climbed over rocks, walked across mountain meadows, climbed up through pine forest and through a deciduous forest with a lot of undergrowth and deep shade. It was so fun to see all of the different biomes in one short hike. Then we took the Wildlife Loop Road back toward camp and saw the park’s famous bison herd up close while they were eating the tasty spring grasses. There were lots of babies to watch.
