We drove the full length of the wildlife loop road this morning and only saw two male bison in the distance. We saw hundreds yesterday! Where did they go? When we got to the new Bison Center (opened last year), the ranger asked Tony how many we saw on our drive and said the herd had been down by the road where we saw them yesterday for several days. He shrugged and said, “Where did they go?” It is a big park, but some of the animals wear radio collars so I think they know or can know where they all moved to.

We moved to our next campsite at Legion Lake and enjoyed a short hike around it. I took a swim in the cold water while Tony did some work. We noticed some quotes from Badger Clark in the Bison Center, and learned all about him on the Badger Clark Trail that circles behind his cabin that is just south of this lake. He was a poet and a cowboy, born in Iowa, and built a cabin in his later years in what is now Custer State Park. We noticed some evidence of a pine beetle infestation around this cabin and in other parts of the forest during our drive earlier.
