Swinging Bridge at Jay Cooke State Park near Duluth

by

I woke up still smiling about the concert last night. We traveled on to the Duluth area to this picturesque state park. The swinging bridge looks really solid, but it does move as you walk across it. It is suspended above the St. Louis River which has navigable rapids and huge slabs of slate and greywacke, a type of sandstone. The geology is pretty interesting here. We climbed on the rocks near the bridge then took a 4-mile hike along the Silver Creek Trail.

The bridge was rebuilt ten years ago after the 2012 flood took it out. That would have been a scary sight! The campsites don’t have electricity, but with highs in the 70s, we are fine on batteries for several days. The trees prevent Dishy from getting a connection and there’s not much Verizon coverage, but the T-Mobile SIM card in the Pepwave router works just fine for me to post this.
