We’re in Maine!!!

by

We continued with the scenic drives through Vermont, New Hampshire, and into Maine. The roads are two-lane, tree-lined and go through villages and towns. We drive for 10 miles or so, then turn onto another road as maps has us weave our way to Maine. No complaints – it’s beautiful country.

Observed while driving: a “Watch for Snow from Roof” sign near a barn with a steep, metal roof right by the road, “Moose—Stay Alert” signs, dead skunks, flood recovery and a traffic stop by the Wolcott Vermont volunteer fire department that they called a “coin drop” as they held out a helmet for donations. Set up a traffic stop—great way to raise money! This was an area affected by the floods.

The Wheeler Brook East Trailhead is near Pleasant River Campground where we are staying for the night. We did three creek crossings and fought off the bugs before heading back. Just keep moving! This damp environment is so wonderful for observing mosses and fungi!

Pleasant River campground is near West Bethel, Maine, and is a really nice, wooded campground. They have a pool (we didn’t use it) and access to the river for kayaking. The bathhouse was clean and well-maintained. It did have tight quarters with two toilets and showers that felt small, RV-sized. But we aren’t big people, and it allowed for multiple users.
