Appalachian Trail Parking off I-80

by

We had quite a time getting to the Appalachian trail parking that is right off I-80 in the Delaware Water Gap. Yesterday we hiked up to see the gap from the Pennsylvania side, but today we wanted to hike different trails that are on the New Jersey side. First time trying to exit, we didn’t see the sign (hidden by a tree) and then didn’t want to turn around because traffic was at a standstill for quite a ways on I-80 West. We took an exit at Columbia, NJ and crossed a toll bridge back to Pennsylvania. That was $3/car, but $10 if the vehicle is over 8-feet tall. Wow – expensive bridge crossing. We then got caught in traffic getting back to try again, and just went to a grocery store instead. It felt like we drove for hours!

We tried our second time, and successfully found the exit. It was now late in the afternoon, so we had to keep it short (2.6 miles). We did part of the Appalachian trail, part of Dunnfield Creek trail and part of the blue dot trail up Tammany Mountain. These all meet and come to that parking spot. As the sun was getting low, we got back on I-80 for a mile or two and hit a toll booth coming out of New Jersey. Wouldn’t you know it—$10 again for being a tall vehicle.

Yay – our driving mishaps turned out fine after all. Down $20 in tolls, but up a good hike.
