It was a windy, cool , 60-degree day for the sea turtle release at Cameron County Beach Access #4 on South Padre Island. The cold snap earlier in the week had stunned almost 1000 sea turtles that had to be rescued. They get too cold and float to the surface where they are in danger from boats and predators. After rescue, their body temps are brought up in warming rooms, their ability to swim is tested, and those ready to go are transported to the beach by pickup truck where they are carried into the surf and given a gentle push out to sea. The gulf is currently warmer than the lagoon, so they were released on the gulf side of the island. It was impressive to see the action and we hope they all survive out there!
