Dash Cam Smart Mirror Add-On/Mod

by

Another upgrade, this time with the dash cam. We’ve been using only a front-facing dash cam on Usain (see Dash Cam Add-on) and decided it was time for both a front- and rear-facing cam. The main advantage is an always-on rear view, since the stock Sprinter camera only displays when in reverse.

We upgraded to the Wolfbox Dash Cam Smart Mirror. It’s intended to be installed over the existing rearview mirror, but we had to install it on the optional dash mount, given the fact that the Sprinter’s LADAR system is so large it would have blocked the front-facing camera. A disadvantage to this location is the additional glare on the screen. The extra long cable to the rear camera was also required given the overall length of Usain.

Installation was pretty time consuming due to having to run a cable from the front dash to the rear of the van. I chose to go up and over instead of under the van. I was able to hide the cable under various interior panels until I reached the roof access port and then ran the cable along the roof rack to the back of the van. I mounted the rear camera near the the existing stock camera.
