Craters of the Moon, Day 2

by

This park could be seen in one full day, but with Tony working, and me taking it a little easy, we chose to go back for a second day. Even so, we did not do the North Crater Trail or the Wilderness Trail. Plenty of hikes for everyone!

We remembered where the sign for the park is on the highway heading south from Arco and didn’t blow by it like we did yesterday.

Today we hiked the Broken Top Loop Trail which takes you out into a lava field to see it all the different features up close. It also has a great overlook area.

The Caves Area was next. We stopped at the visitor center on our way in to get a free permit to enter the lava tube caves. This is just the park’s way of making sure you are aware of the white-nose syndrome that is decimating bat populations and how to help prevent spreading it. You are asked to not wear any clothing, back packs, shoes, etc. that have been in another cave during the last five years. They say that even washing in hot water doesn’t kill the fungus if it is on your clothes. We did walk through anti-fungal mats at Mammoth Cave in Kentucky. We were careful to wear different things here.

Supper at the BBQ restaurant at the RV park was delicious. I had a smoked baked potato and some jalapeño hush puppies. Tony got his meat fix with some pulled pork quesadillas with huckleberry sauce. I had a huckleberry cocktail. Huckleberries continue to be a thing here in Idaho.
