It was ninety-eight degrees today in De Smet, SD, while touring sites of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s life here. It was flat uncomfortable and Usain’s air-conditioner struggled a bit. I took the tour in town at the Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society that included the Surveryors’ House they lived in one winter, the First School of De Smet where Laura was a student, a replica of the Brewster’s School where she taught at age 15, and the home her father built in town for the family after Laura was married. We also walked through Loftus Store, and with the help of the store proprietor, we found the family plot in the cemetery and drove by Silver Lake. We are spending the night at the Ingalls’ Homestead in one of the four RV sites they have. We took a walking tour here that showed various buildings and homes on farms back in the 1800s and a church and school that were moved to this site. The homestead is beautifully maintained and has gardens and corn crops to go along with the prairie slough and grasses that were here when the Ingalls arrived. I must give a word of thanks to my Aunt Carole for introducing me to the Little House books when I was a young girl. I have been a fan ever since!
