Today we drove on SD Highway 25 for the most part, starting off on gravel to avoid a closure. There are so many prairie potholes in NE South Dakota. It’s fun to say and really scenic to drive through—literally— the roads are built up and go through the prairie potholes. Many are lake-sized, but shallow. Some are designated as water fowl production sites where about half of the ducks in North America are hatched and some are hunting areas. We arrived in Ft. Ransom State Park in ND in the afternoon and did a short hike after dinner. This is a lovely state park right by the Sheyenne River. It’s very green, well-maintained, and quiet. Without a lake to attract the summer boating crowd, this is a great place for just camping, hiking, fishing, or kayaking the river. The North Country Trail (4600 mile-long) that starts in Vermont goes through this park.
