Cascade River State Park

by

At last, we are seeing some of the trip list for the North Shore shared by Deb and Steve when they traveled up here with Cindy and Paul. We toured the lighthouse at Two Harbors and we stopped for pie (five-layer chocolate and blueberry) at Betty’s Pies. The lighthouse is also a bed and breakfast, so just the tower and an assistant light keeper house are on the tour. They also have the pilot house from the shipwrecked (in 1979) Frontenac on the grounds. There is a long, concrete seawall protecting the harbor with a lighthouse and coastguard horn at the end. Signs warn of the potential loud noise. There was a sailboat docked at the wall as we walked by, which would be a fun way to see this coast.

I was able to get one night at Cascade River State Park, which has aptly-named waterfalls that “cascade” down the final stretch of the river on its way to Lake Superior.

The water has a root beer color to it and lots of foam like a root beer float. I might have dessert in mind, but the color comes from the bogs upstream that we drove past today and tumbling over rocks creates the foam. There is no development along Cascade River to cause any pollution. We saw similar colors in streams in Maine as well for the same reason.

  1. Are you having cool weather? The North Shore usually is cooler than elsewhere. Love the clear lake water! Thanks for your explanation of the root beer coloration of the Cascade River.

    1. It was cool until our last couple of days, then it was sticky-hiking weather but still cool at night. We needed that cool off at night to sleep with the windows open.
