Split Rock Lighthouse State Park

by

A hike before breakfast is a great way to start the day. Tony saw that rain was expected and wanted to get one in before that happened. We hiked from our campsite to the bridge across Cascade River then up to the Superior Hiking Trail which is a 310+ mile long trail along the North Shore. Once again, bug spray was mandatory for our enjoyment.

Before we left this campground, Catnip had a long walk around camp and down the road. Chipmunks were taunting her, and one small one came within two feet of her. She went into pounce mode, but her anchor saved the youngster.

We arrived at the Split Rock Lighthouse to light rain. The Shipwreck Creek campground here is just two years old, and it is beautifully planned out. There are hidden drainage structures throughout, and prairie growing and blooming everywhere. I’m sure it will be forested someday. There is a multipurpose paved trail leading back to the lighthouse and to shoreline trails. I would highly recommend staying here if you can snag a reservation. All of the North Shore state parks, (there are eight of them) are full or nearly full as I checked for reservations.

Walking along Pebble Beach was a pleasant water-tromping experience. The lake water is so clear, and the lake view is beautiful. Ellington Island is very close and the water is low enough to walk through to get to it.
