Better Late Than Never

Today’s Travel
(A) Home, Ankeny, IA to (B) Second Chapter Brewing, Ogallala, NE
470 miles

We had planned to start our next adventure on Sunday, May 31, but a checkup visit to Lisa’s oncologist the week before threw a monkey wrench into our plans. A potential issue was discovered but after an MRI, ultrasound, and finally a biopsy, we didn’t get away until Thursday, June 11. Hoping for the best, we hit the road the morning of Thursday, June 4, the day after her last appointment, but before she received the results. We got the good news that all was fine on our way across Nebraska. Woohoo!

Our original plan was to stop at Lisa’s dad on our way to northern California, but our delayed start forced us to bypass Fort Collins (for now – will stop at the end of the trip) and keep to I-80. It also meant that we would need to drive more miles per day than we typically do in order to make our first stop in California for a Wednesday, June 10 reservation made a couple of months ago.

Second Chapter Brewing

We spent our first night at Second Chapter Brewing, a Harvest Host in Ogallala, Nebraska. Lisa enjoyed a glass of cider and I had one of their beers, both brewed in this, the town’s original library that now has an apropos name. The brewery has the familiar look of an old one-room library of the past complete with the wood flooring, tin ceiling, and book cases full of books.

We also partook of the brewery’s cheese and crackers offering with the crackers supplied by Bittersweet Bakery, a local shop that makes them from spent grain from the brewery. All in all, a wonderful and unique experience.

Ogallala

After our drinks and snacks we finished the day with a stroll around Ogallala.
